津田と申します．

vine2.6にMySQLをインストールしています．
MySQLをrpmからインストールしました．
しかしながら，正常にインストール作業が終了したと思うのですが，
MySQLのrootユーザにパスワードを設定することができません．

以下のバージョンのrpmをインストールしてみました．

% sudo rpm -Uvh MySQL_3.23.53-0vl2_i386.rpm 
MySQL                       ##################################################
Installing all prepared tables
030108 23:14:50  /usr/sbin/mysqld: Shutdown Complete


PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
This is done with:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root  password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h carroll  password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.

NOTE:  If you are upgrading from a MySQL <= 3.22.10 you should run
the /usr/bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!

Please report any problems with the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql

% sudo rpm -Uvh MySQL-client_3.23.53-0vl2_i386.rpm 
MySQL-client 
% 

そして，指示の通りにrootユーザにパスワードを設定しようとすると
%/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password ***
mysqladmin: unable to change password; error: 'Access denied for user: '@localhost' to database 'mysql''

%/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h carroll  password ****
mysqladmin: unable to change password; error: 'Access denied for user: '@carroll' to database 'mysql''

と表示され，設定できません．suでroot権限でも同じエラーが出ます．
コマンドライン上で

%mysql -u root -h localhost

mysql>
と始まります．しかしながら，createでデータベースを作成することが
できません．

mysql>create database hoge
ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '@localhost' to database 'hoge'

なぜパスワードさえも設定できないかがわかりません．

一応，以下のrpmもインストールしてみましたが，変りませんでした．
MySQL-Max_3.23.53-0vl2_i386.rpm
MySQL-bench_3.23.53-0vl2_i386.rpm
MySQL-devel_3.23.53-0vl2_i386.rpm 

すみませんが，宜しくお願いします．
