解決したら、すみませんが、このエラーは恐らく/etc/my.cnfファイルは既に存在し
ていて、
'old_passwords=1'のオプションがあるかと思われます。

080504 23:21:05 /usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld: unknown variable
'old_passwords=1'

新MySQLは'old_passwords=1'を対応していないので、このようなエラーがでてきたと
考えられます。

解決方法は、'old_passwords=1'の行をコメントしてみてください。

gives you a log in /var/lib/mysql that may be helpful.
