there is ujis binary for slackware (build by Mr Hama):
ftp://ftp.SoftAgency.co.jp/mysql/japan/Contrib/HAMA/
this binary is static linked.
so, this will work on any linux(libc5) machine.
`mysqld --log' provide you more information.
when you get error, you should start mysqld with --log option.
